Here is "Dillar a Dollar" Nancy Ann Storybook doll circa 1930s - 1950s. This doll was donated by Patricia Renner, a dear friend of the Ohlens. "I was five years old when I came down with polio. My legs were paralyzed. I was bedridden for about three months. It was 1951. Hospitals were overflowing with polio patients. Mild cases like mine were treated at home. Friends of my parents offered to bring me gifts. I don’t know how the storybook doll idea caught on, but I received many. Mostly they came in boxes with clear plastic covers so they could be displayed and dustproof. Eventually I collected 20 dolls throughout grade school. The boxes on shelves in my tiny room gave way to a lovely antique cabinet my parents acquired when I was about 10 years old. I didn’t know or care about the original boxes becoming part of the value. When I turned 80 I still had the cabinet with the dolls and worried what would become of them at my death. I couldn’t bear to think about them becoming homeless. Then I learned about a charity auction. It seemed like a perfect solution."
